CMCS’s educational philosophy

つくばインターナショナルスクール|CMCSの理念画像
The Cross Mission Christian School’s constant quest is for biblical ‘truth and love’.

Educational philosophy: ‘Stand in the Truth. Live by Love’.

Relevant biblical passages include.

‘You are valuable and precious in my sight. I love you.’
(Old Testament: Isaiah 42:4)

‘You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’
(New Testament: John 8:31)

*The following texts are all quotations from the New Common Translation.

CMCS’s vision for students

①Ambassadors of Christ who have grown holistically as one person.

We practice ‘holistic education’ (education of the whole person), including spirituality, physicality, mentality, humanity and sociality, based on the Christian spirit.

Spirituality: People of faith who love and fear God.
Humanity: People who love their neighbours and bring peace.
Intelligence: People who are full of wisdom and knowledge.
Sensibility … A person with a kind and compassionate heart.
Physicality – A person whose body is healthy and vibrant.

‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is the beginning of discretion.’
(Old Testament: Proverbs 9:10)

‘Love God with all your heart.’
(New Testament: Matthew 22:37)

②Ambassadors of Christ who contribute to the expansion of the Kingdom of God in their respective areas of expertise in the international community.

We aim for our students to shine on the international stage and to be active not only in Japan but also widely throughout the world.

Rooted in Christian values and actively working in partnership with people from all over the world, we are committed to the mission of developing the next generation of leaders with an international outlook and global insight.

As ‘ambassadors of Christ’ for the next generation, we aim for students who will be able to extend the Kingdom of God in the future in the areas of politics, economics, education, science and technology, media, culture and the arts in accordance with their gifts.

③ Ambassadors of Christ who are committed to the extension of God’s Kingdom and who will lead and preach to the next generation.

We aim for our children to realise the work of ‘Cross Mission’ from ‘Japan to the world’ and from ‘generation to generation’. Our schools have a Cross Mission vision, based on the Bible.

Like the cross that crosses over, we aim to be a school where the ‘Gospel’ that brings salvation to people across time and across nations is used to connect ‘Tsukuba to the world’ and ‘generation to generation’.

Seven strengths for realising the Cross Mission

①Christian ‘educational community’.

The school values a culture of learning, serving and growing together, following the teachings of Jesus Christ, who taught us to “love one another”.

Across the grades, seniors mentor juniors and students help each other to shape their learning as a community (Community Study).

This creates a sense of unity throughout the school and fosters an awareness and sense of responsibility as an educational community.

②’Bilingual education’ in Japanese and English

Cross Mission Christian School aims to be a “globally connected” school with an international education programme.

However, some people may have the following concerns

“My family doesn’t speak English, so I’m worried that my child will only learn English…”
‘Will I not be able to communicate with my parents?’
‘Will there not be enough time for Japanese language education?’

CMCS is a bilingual education system that provides education in Japanese and English with equal importance.

By learning both languages in a balanced way, students acquire the ability to use both languages in a natural environment.

Furthermore, although based in Japan, the school provides opportunities for students from multicultural and different backgrounds to study together and experience different cultures, helping children to communicate confidently in English, regardless of their level of English ability.

We also support students in gaining admission to both domestic universities and excellent overseas universities.

③ Small class size system

The school has introduced a small class system.

Teachers are able to monitor students’ progress in real time and provide assistance and feedback where necessary, and it is easier for them to build trust with each other.

Small classes also allow students to learn and communicate in a relaxed atmosphere in class. Because classes are not as large, students learn more at their own pace and are more free to express their ideas and questions.

④ All teaching staff are devout ‘Christians’.

In Christian schools, the role of the teacher is very important.

Based on the belief that the ‘very existence of the teacher’, who is directly involved with the students, has a significant impact on their education, the school places great importance on the fact that ‘all teaching staff are Christians of deep faith’.

As it is difficult to provide a proper education without the three elements of love of God, faith in God and teaching skills, we are committed to ensuring that we have teachers and staff with these elements to enhance the quality and value of education.

⑤An ‘integrated’ elementary, middle and high school education school

The school has introduced an integrated elementary, junior high and high school system.

Students spend the primary, middle and high school stages in an integrated manner, ensuring continuity in their education and allowing them to concentrate on their studies in a stable environment.

It also helps to control the so-called ‘middle 1 gap’ and ‘high 1 gap’. It prevents disconnects in learning and allows for smooth adaptation to the new school year.

Teachers and staff also support students’ development over a longer period of time, providing an environment in which students can grow and develop with a sense of security.

⑥ACSI | Education Accreditation Organisation ‘official member school’.

We are a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), the world’s largest accreditation body for Christian education, with more than one million students in 101 countries worldwide, including new schools.

In addition, we work with national institutions (international schools, Christian education institutions, Christian churches, etc.) and make full use of our international Christian network to provide a supportive educational environment and career options.

⑦Trinity Education

We aim to be a school where the serving church, committed teachers and praying families come together to nurture our pupils. This triune back-up enables a comprehensive support system to be built up for the pupils.

In the first place, the primary responsibility for education belongs to the parents. However, with the support of the church community and committed teachers, school pupils experience internal healing, relationship repair, resolution of worries and, in some cases, freedom from smartphone and gaming addiction, as they enter the school.

They are touched by God’s love, grow in character, are motivated to learn and achieve holistic development.

The Trinity approach to education supports the holistic development of the student and produces students who will be active in international and Japanese society, contribute to the expansion of the Kingdom and lead the next generation.

‘They will rebuild the ruins of the past, they will raise up the ruins of the old desolations.’
(Old Testament: Isaiah 61:4)
